| Brake for Optimum Performance on a Mountain Bike |
To prolong your and your bike's longevity, learn to use your brakes properly.
Step One Squeeze both your front and back brakes when slowing, but use your front brakes more on level or slight downhill terrain. The front brakes are more powerful and will stop your bike more efficiently.
Step Two Brake in bursts. Squeeze your brakes when the trail is clear of obstacles, then release, then squeeze to save your forearm muscles from overexertion.
Step Three Use less front brakes on steep downhills and lean back to prevent an end-over wipeout, also known as a front brake endo.
Step Four Brake before turning, then release your brakes during the turn for the most control.
Step Five Hold your back brake down and lean to the inside of a turn to skid for a superquick but less controlled turn.
Step Six Anticipate slower braking time in wet or muddy conditions.
