How to Ride a Mountain Bike With Toe Clips
Adding toe clips to your mountain bike is a cheap way to maximize pedal efficiency. Use toe clips to push down and pull up on the pedals for greater locomotion.

Step One

Place one foot in the toe clip while the bike is leaning against a wall. The toe clip looks like a basket on the pedal.

Step Two

Pull the adjustment strap of the toe clip until the clip is snug to your foot. Make sure you can slide your foot in and out of the toe clip without difficulty.

Step Three

Find a flat or downhill section to start on when you first try riding with toe clips.

Step Four

Sit on your bike with one foot already in a toe clip, and pedal a few times to gain momentum.

Step Five

Flip your free pedal one half rotation with your foot so that the toe clip is now on top of the pedal. A pedal with toe clips is weighted, so the clips rest down.

Step Six

Place your toe in this clip so that now both feet are in the toe clips.

Step Seven

Ride your bike by pushing down on the pedals and pulling up on the toe clips. You'll notice an increase in speed as well as in the use of different leg muscles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice doing the pedal flip so you can put your feet in the clips quickly and automatically.
  • If you have trouble getting both feet in the clips, have a friend hold your bike steady while you slide your feet in.
  • Mountain biking is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
